 SOUTHSIDE ISD HONORS THE SCHOOL BOARD
The Southside ISD community honored the school Board during a regular Board meeting on Tuesday, January 25. Each member received a “goody bag” containing appreciation letters, art-work and other items just to say, “Thank you!” Gallardo Elementary student, Daniel Farias, read “A Recipe for a Marvelous School Board.” Dr. Juan Antonio Jasso also presented each member with a certificate honoring each one of the board members for their leadership and dedication to Southside ISD. Board President, Mrs. Lisa L. Salazar, thanked each staff member for all of their hard work and contributions to Southside ISD.
 CHIEF OF POLICE THANKS THE SOUTHSIDE ISD COMMUNITY
Southside ISD Chief of Police, Richard Palomo, recognized and presented volunteers of the first Cardinals Caring for Cardinals with a Certificate of Appreciation during a recent regular Board meeting. The toy drive was a huge success, thanks to the Southside ISD community and all of the volunteers. Chief Palomo stated, “This event was a huge success and we could have not done it without the help from all of the volunteers and from folks who donated items for this event.”

SOUTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL POLICE EXPLORERS HOST REGIONAL COMPETITIONS
The Southside High School Criminal Justice Department hosted the recent Texas Public Service Association, Region 11 and12 competition. Approximately 118 students from 10 schools competed in Criminal Justice Events. Pictured is Southside High School 10th grade student, Justin Olivares, participating in the foot pursuit event. Southside's Criminal Justice students took 2nd place in the SWAT Extraction Event. Team members participating in the SWAT Extraction Event were: Mathew Knapp, Justin Gutierrez, Isaac Trevino, Jose White, Rockland Gleason, and Jaysin Schorth. Justin Olivarez and Nydia Nunez received 3rd place in the Criminal Incident Domestic Disturbance Event.
SISD DISTRICT-WIDE GO RED DAY, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2012!!
The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® movement works every day to fund research and fight this killer so more women can be saved. But they need our help. Please celebrate National Wear Red Day® on Friday, February 3, to raise awareness about heart disease among women and to raise funds to ensure the research that could save a woman’s life never has to be denied.
MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WERE SELECTED TO REGION XI SOUTH TEXAS HONOR BAND
Fourteen members from Southside ISD’s J.L. Matthey Symphonic Band were selected for the Region XI South Texas Middle School Honor Band. A total of about 250 students from area middle schools auditioned to earn a placement in the two Honor Bands. Several students earned first chair in their section. Band Director, Gregorio Garcia congratulated the young musicians for their great efforts and talent.

MARINES VISIT THEIR ALMA MATTER, SOUTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL, TO INSPIRE DAEP STUDENTS
LCpl. Andrew Garza and PFC John D. Cruz, Southside High School graduates from the class of 2010, stopped by to visit with Discipline Alternative Education Program students. The Marines spent time talking with students about Honor, Courage and Commitment. Students paid close attention as Garza and Cruz shared stories from their experience while in training in the military. LCpl. Garza told the students, "The world is a lot bigger than you think." He said, "You can always change, and it's never too late to succeed and accomplish great things." PFC Cruz said, "Always stay on a straight path." Both Marines are in active reserves. LCpl. Garza is stationed in Corpus and PFC Cruz in San Antonio.

SOUTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SELECTED FOR THE TMEA REGION HONOR BAND
Recently, numerous Southside High students auditioned for the Texas Music Educators Association Region Honor Band. Three students were selected to be a part of the group: Victor Guajardo (tuba), Joseph Trevino (tenor saxophone), and Adrian Esquivel (clarinet). Joseph and Adrian placed 1st and 4th in their sections, respectively, and both were chosen to go on and audition for the All-State Honor Band. Both placed very well. In Area, which includes Texas regions 11, 12, 18, and 27, Joseph placed 2nd of 4, and Adrian 8th of 24. William Ricketts and Michael Misko, Band directors, congratulated these students for their excellent performance.

 J.L. MATTHEY MIDDLE SCHOOL 8TH GRADE LADY CARDINAL BASKETBALL TEAM FINISHES WITH AN UNDEFEATED SEASON
Southside ISD’s J.L. Matthey Middle School, Coach Brenda Carden, congratulated the 8th grade “A” Lady Cardinal basketball team, for completing an undefeated season and becoming the “West Zone” champions. These young ladies went to the post season tournament at Southwest High School. They defeated Zamora 63-32, Harlandale 53 – 30 and finally Scobee 46–40 to become the undefeated “Big 15 Conference Champions”! These lady Cardinals are also successful in the classroom, making the A-B honor roll.

SOUTHSIDE ISD POLICE THANKS THE CARDINAL COMMUNITY FOR THEIR GENEROSITY
The 1st Annual SISD Police Department "Cardinals Caring for Cardinals Christmas Toy Drive" was a huge success. The Southside ISD Police Department thanks all the student groups, employees, parents, and corporate sponsors who donated to the 1st Christmas Toy Drive. The toy drive was a huge success as a result of everyone’s generosity. Over thirty of SISD’s less fortunate students had a very special Christmas, as Blue Santa made a special delivery to them on the day of the event.

 SOUTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
Over 30 students from Southside High School’s Student Council volunteered 4 hours at the Respite center adding hundreds of hours of group volunteer time. The Respite Care Center is a licensed child placement agency. The Davidson Respite House is licensed by the State of Texas to provide shelter to children with developmental disabilities who have been removed from their home as a result of abuse and neglect. Students spent time learning about how this non-profit organization is run and funded, and some of the challenges they face. Students helped clean up some of the Respite care facilities where children are cared for, and students also had the pleasure of spending time with some of the very special children who are currently living at the Respite Center.
SOUTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL’S SPANISH CLUB RECOGNIZED CAFETERIA EMPLOYEES AND CUSTODIANS
As customary during the holidays, the Southside High School Spanish Club organized a fund raiser to recognize the arduous work and dedication of the High School Cafeteria Staff and Custodians showering them with gifts and holiday songs.
SANTA VISITS SOUTHSIDE ISD GALLARDO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS VIA TELECONFERENCE
Gallardo students received a visit from the North Pole! Santa read letters written to him from the students. Santa also read the book Snowmen at Christmas to Kinder students in Ms. Deleon's class. Students were able to speak to Santa and ask some important questions in this fun and educational, interactive Video Conference. Many more of these visits are scheduled over the next week and a half and the production crew are our very own Southside High School students and staff! Southside High School Video Production classes led by Mr. Martin Dreiss with the assistance of Technology staff member Susan Kiesler presented their first live video production of Santa Claus to 3 classes at Gallardo Elementary on December 14.
SOUTHSIDE ISD RECOGNIZES, DAN ARELLANO, BATTLE OF MEDINA HISTORIAN
SISD Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Juan Antonio Jasso, and his staff recognized "Battle of Medina" historian for his efforts in sharing the importance of this factual event that occurred in 1813 on our very own grounds. The "Battle of Medina" was re-enacted during SISD's annual Cardinal Fest by local actors. Dr. Juan Antonio Jasso, Mr. Phil Chavez and Dr. Carl Scarbrough presented Mr. Dan Arellano with a poster in a frame that reads: "Battle of Medina, August 18, 1813, 175th Anniversary", also listing some of the other battles fought in years past.

 LOSOYA INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL CHOIR AND CHOIR TEACHER VISIT KABB NEWS STATION
The 6th grade Losoya Choir visited KABB Channel 29 and its morning host Ernie Zuniga. While visiting the news station the 6th grade choir taped some Christmas music that will air on their Christmas show on Monday, December 26th. The choir students enjoyed the opportunity to showcase some of the music they have been working hard to learn throughout the holiday season. The students enjoyed a question and answer period with the morning host Ernie Zuniga and had a great time learning more about a busy news station.
SISD SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS SPEAKS AT PTO-PTA AND COMMUNITY FORUMS
This time, Dr. Jasso spoke with parents at Heritage Elementary‘s First Annual “TAMALADA”, held on Thursday, December 8th. Parents were served homemade tamales, rice and beans as they met with Dr. Jasso to discuss district goals. He also answered questions parents had in regards to district challenges and successes.

Southside ISD Gallardo Elementary Student Council sponsored a penny drive for the American Red Cross. The students collected $313 for the American Red Cross. PEARCE PRIMARY STUDENTS ENJOY LEARNING ABOUT DIFFERENT CAREERS
Pearce Primary students were fortunate to have several community members take part in their recent Career Day. This year Pearce Primary was focusing on some careers that will be in highest demand at the time the students will be graduating from high school and needing to make those career choices. In doing so, students and staff were honored to have the following professionals speak to students about being prepared for and performing daily tasks in their respective positions:

FIRST GRADE STUDENT FINDS HIS PASSION IN “FLINT KNAPPING”
In 1st grade at Heritage Elementary, young students have been discussing Rocks, Minerals, and Soil. A student in Ms. Jessica Delgado’s class is very talented and has a hobby collecting arrowhead and making arrowheads. In this picture, Alex is "flint knapping”. Flint knapping is the process of making stone tools (i.e. arrowheads, projectile points, hand axes, etc.).

 FREEDOM ELEMENTARY KINDERGARTEN STUDENT HONORS HER MOM ON 911 CEREMONY
Freedom Elementary School recently hosted their annual Patriot Day/Sept. 11th Remembrance Day ceremony. All students in pre-kinder through 4th grades honored their military service men and women. Kindergarten student, in Mrs. Blanca Morales Dual Language class, proudly holds her American flag in front of a video clip that her mother, Sgt. Ramos, sent to Freedom Elementary. In the video, Sgt. Ramos sends out a shout out to her daughter and to Freedom Elementary students as she explains what her job duties are in Afghanistan.
